Nephrologist

Clinical Associate Professor, Melbourne University, Nigel Toussaint is a Nephrologist with special interest in Chronic Kidney Disease. This includes the management of the disease as well as its associated complications of cardiovascular disease, mineral and bone disorders, hypertension and anaemia.

After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1997, Clinical Associate Professor Nigel Toussaint became a Physician (FRACP) in 2006 after completing advanced training in Nephrology. Since then he has undertaken further education, obtaining his PhD from Monash University in 2009 and completing a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Epidemiology (Monash University, 2007) to enhance his knowledge in clinical research. He has also completed an NHMRC NICS Fellowship in implementation research and has undertaken clinical research in the area of vascular calcification and cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Clinical Associate Professor Nigel Toussaint currently works at The Royal Melbourne Hospital as a Consultant Nephrologist. He is involved in the management of patients with CKD, those on dialysis (peritoneal dialysis and haemodialysis) and those with kidney transplants, and is also the Physician-In-Charge of Clinical Research in the Department of Nephrology at The Royal Melbourne Hospital.

As well as being a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, Clinical Associate Professor Nigel Toussaint is also involved with the Specialist Advisory Committee in Nephrology, supervising the training of Nephrology advanced trainees nationally. He has published many studies in various peer-reviewed journals and continues to participate in and present research work at National and International Conferences, as well as giving lectures at symposiums on a local and national level. He is also involved in the writing and review of Australian Clinical Guidelines in Nephrology.
