For years now, the Australian waistline has been growing at an alarming rate, with more and more of the population being diagnosed as “obese”. Obesity is not a simple condition of eating too much- it is a serious, chronic disease that can considerably shorten a person’s life. As well as having a great impact upon a person’s psychological and social well being, there are major health risks associated with obesity, including the heightened risk of developing conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and certain types of cancer.
At NWSC, our Obesity Management service utilise the latest in surgical treatments of this condition to help those who have been unable to lose the weight through diets, cures, tablets or medicines. These surgical procedures are conducted by our General and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Mr Ian Michell.
This includes laparoscopic gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass.
- The process begins when the patient first completes a “Patient Profile” and sees the Bariatric Nurse.
- They then see Mr Michell for their first appointment.
- There is then a strict pre-assessment programme where patients see a Dietician, Psychologist and a Respiratory Physician.
- The patient then has a review appointment with Mr Michell and if there are no problems, a surgery date is arranged. This process takes between 6 – 8 weeks.
Mr Michell operates at Epworth Hospital Richmond, Essendon Private Hospital, Austin and Warringal Private.
At the time of surgery there is an out of pocket cost of $5,000.00. This covers the out of pocket costs for the surgeon, anaesthetist and assistant surgeon. Following the surgery patients are then bulk billed.
Patients need to have private health insurance which covers them for item 31569 (Gastric Band), 31575 (Sleeve Gastrectomy, 31572 ( Gastric Bypass). We strongly advise patients to confirm this with their health fund.
If you are not insured it is possible to pay for the surgery yourself. We can arrange for the hospital to provide a quote.
